SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol and is the IETF protocol for VoIP. This is used for initiating interactive user sessions when they involve elements such as video, voice, chat and gaming. It is also ideal for conference calls.

SIP establishes call parameters at either end of the communication, handling transfer and termination of calls. It also uses proxy servers to help route requests to the user's location, where users can also register and upload their current location to the server.
